An Early Taste for Country Music

Born in Chanute, Kansas, Brian Odle got an early taste for country music literally before he could talk. Riding around in his father’s work truck, Brian would listen to his dad belt out songs recorded by great country music legends he was hearing on the radio. The elder Odle worked as an electrical lineman and spent a lot of time traveling from job site to job site. Often taking Brian on these long excursions, he immersed his baby boy in the sounds of country.

As Odle grew up, he began singing along with country music legends like Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Billy Joe Shaver and many others his dad looked up to. Tragically, Brian’s father passed away in 1997.

Life is short and you must pursue any and all dreams that you have!

Odle wrote that line down one day after his father had unexpectedly died. His dad’s love of music not only spurred him on, but inspired Brian to go out and chase his dreams. After winning several talent contests, locally as well as in other states, Odle went on to enter a contest in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee. There, he was approached by Dwight Johnson, a promoter and talent scout, about his ability to capture an audience. Johnson suggested that he go to Nashville and really learn the business. Brian did just that. He hooked up with great songwriters like Pat Durbin, Rich Fagen and others, building strong friendships along the way that served him well.

Chasing his dream has now become a reality. Odle’s goals have never been to have a short-lived sudden burst of fame for major financial gain. His goal rather, was to attain the respect and friendship of all the great people he has become close friends with. He succeeded by touching their souls with a voice that delivers the emotional messages of his songs. When asked what it meant by paying your dues, his reply is simple.

“It certainly isn’t dragging equipment in and out of smoky bar rooms,” he quipped. “It’s losing almost everything you have, your money, credit and the respect of your peers, who think you’ve lost your mind chasing your musical dreams. That is a small price to pay for doing what you love.”

Today, Brian Odle and his band perform shows throughout the United States. His first album, My Strongest Weakness, was well received. The ultimate compliment was paid by a music critic who stated the record demonstrated Kansan’s ability to not only write a great country song, but perform it as well.

Most recently, Odle had the opportunity to visit with George Jones at his Tennessee home where he began a friendship and mentorship with the country music legend. Not only did this mutual admiration society open doors for Brian, it gave him a glimpse into what country music is all about.
